How effectively those connections work influence the opportunities available to people and the capability employers can draw on.
Jobs and Skills Report 2025: Connecting for impact - aligning productivity, participation and skills, shows why these connections matter. Stronger alignment between people’s skills and job opportunities can support participation and productivity, while helping employers build more resilient and adaptable workforces. The report also highlights the importance of making effective use of the skills and capabilities that already exist across the economy.
This becomes more important as the labour market changes. Technology is reshaping work and creating demand for new capabilities. Demographic shifts are changing the composition of the workforce. At the same time, employment is shifting towards service industries and higher skilled roles.
A strong jobs and skills system helps Australia respond to these changes and prepare for what comes next. That means understanding where workforce needs are heading, so people have opportunities to develop their capabilities throughout their careers and employers are better placed to adapt.
The challenge is bigger than developing more skills or creating more jobs. Skills need to be put to effective use. People need ways to move between learning and work as their circumstances change. Employers also have a role in creating jobs that make good use of the capabilities people bring.
This is why pathways matter.
Some pathways begin in education or training and lead into work. Others allow people to build on what they already know, change direction or respond to new opportunities. As careers and workforce needs evolve, these pathways need to evolve with them. The report points to the growing movement between vocational education as one example of how learning pathways are already becoming more flexible.

Education and training providers build capability and respond to emerging demand. Governments influence the conditions for participation. Communities understand the opportunities and challenges in their local economies. People bring their own aspirations and experiences.

This focus on collaboration is at the heart of the inaugural Jobs & Skills Month, from 20 October to 20 November 2026.
Under the theme Pathways to Success, Jobs & Skills Month will bring together people and organisations from across Australia’s jobs and skills system to share evidence and experience. Events across the country will create opportunities to learn from different perspectives and explore how pathways through learning and work can be strengthened.
A key part of Jobs & Skills Month will be the release of the 2026 Jobs and Skills Report. The report will provide the latest evidence and insights into Australia’s jobs and skills landscape and help inform the national conversation about the workforce challenges and opportunities ahead.
Australia’s future workforce depends on our ability to develop skills, put them to effective use and adapt as needs change. A strong, connected and responsive jobs and skills system help make that possible.
