Why the regions matter: Jobs, skills and opportunity across regional Australia

Regional Australia remains a significant driver of Australia’s prosperity, identity and cultural strength. Regional communities sustain essential industries, support economic growth and contribute to the nation’s social and economic wellbeing.

This discussion will explore why regional Australia matters to the nation’s future prosperity, and the foundational contribution of regional jobs and skills. Panellists will reflect on the key findings and opportunities identified in JSA’s latest Jobs and Skills Roadmap for Regional Australia (scheduled for release on 10 November 2026), including the role of education and the supports needed to improve tertiary participation and pathways to learning and work in regional Australia. The panel will also discuss broader efforts to strengthen regional Australia and support the nation’s long-term resilience and prosperity.

Chaired by Claire Sparke, Assistant Secretary of Jobs and Skills Australia’s Workforce Futures Branch, the panel brings together perspectives from regional education, policy, research and regional development:

  • Megan Lilly, JSA Deputy Commissioner
  • The Hon Fiona Nash, Regional Education Commissioner
  • Dr Xavier Csar, CEO, Regional Development Victoria, Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions

Following introductory remarks, the Chair will lead a panel discussion before opening the conversation in response to questions from the audience.
